For the last eight years Syria Shell Petroleum Development (SSPD) has been part-funding an archaeological dig in the far north of Syria, not far from the Turkish border, at a site called Tell Sabi Abyad. The site, which covers several hectares, is being excavated under the direction of Peter Akkermans, Professor of Near Eastern Prehistory at Leiden University in The Netherlands and Curator of the Ancient Near East Department at The Netherlands National Museum of Antiquities
