Shell officials to promote workplace learning program at GetEnergy 2007

Global stakeholders of the oil and gas industry to attend interactive networking event

March 1, 2007

Shell, a leading player in the global energy and petrochemicals industry, will present the advantages of learning and workforce development activities as it participates as Champion sponsor of GetEnergy 2007, which will be held at the JW Marriot Dubai on March 26-28. Shell’s sponsorship for the second year running of one of the oil and gas industry’s best global networking events is part of the company’s initiative to demonstrate a strong global presence and communicate a positive message to all sectors of the society.

“GetEnergy 2007 is an ideal platform to share with our industry partners the benefits of adopting specialized programmes that improve learning and develop human capital. Shell has aggressively promoted learning and workforce development activities to address various challenges, and we would like others to be able to appreciate the positive results of such initiatives through the model programmes that we will be presenting at the event. Key Shell staff members will be at hand to entertain queries and facilitate the exchange of ideas,” said Adam Lomas, Vice President, Learning and Development, Shell International Exploration and Production.

Shell will participate in all parts of GetEnergy 2007, including the Learning Arena exhibition, which will gather more than 70 of the world’s leading academic institutions along with their oil company partners. The highly interactive Learning Arena exhibition will feature live interview sessions with Lomas and Andrew Vaughan, Technical Director of Shell’s Exploration and Production. The two Shell officials will offer an in-depth discussion of Shell’s workplace learning program.

Workplace learning is an initiative to transfer and share expertise between local and expatriate employees. It aims to cultivate knowledge through the ASL concept, which stands for ask (encouraging questions from the employees), learn (through libraries, networks and groups) and share (encouraging employees to share their knowledge by uploading it on the company’s website).

Shell has operations in more than 145 countries, including Oman, where its joint venture Petroleum Development Oman extensively implements the workplace learning program. Shell companies worldwide have businesses in oil and gas exploration and production; production and marketing of liquefied natural gas and gas to liquids; manufacturing, marketing and shipping of oil products and chemicals and renewable energy projects including wind and solar power.

GetEnergy brings together national, international and independent oil companies, service providers, government agencies, universities, colleges, institutes and private training providers to discuss global issues in workforce development of the upstream industry. The event features interactive exchanges, case study groups, Master classes and oil company interviews examining various topics such as local content, fast tracking local talent, effective recruitment retention, industry-university partnership, graduate recruitment, leadership development, knowledge transfer, company-wide competence, coaching and mentoring and on-the-job training.

Foundation stone laid for pearl gas to liquids project

February 22, 2007

Doha, Qatar: H.H. Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, Heir Apparent of the State of Qatar, today laid the foundation stone for the Pearl Gas to Liquids (GTL) project, a world-scale integrated project that will make Qatar the GTL capital of the world. Pearl GTL is not only the world’s largest integrated GTL project, but also the largest energy project ever launched within the borders of Qatar.

The ceremony at Ras Laffan Industrial City was attended by dignitaries including His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, the Chief Executive of Royal Dutch Shell plc, Jeroen van der Veer, and visitors from Qatar and abroad.

The Pearl GTL project is being developed under a Development and Production Sharing Agreement with the government of the State of Qatar. The agreement covers offshore and onshore project development and operations, with Shell providing 100 per cent of project funding.

Upstream some 1.6 billion cubic feet of wellhead gas will be produced, transported and processed per day to produce 120,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day of condensate, liquefied petroleum gas and ethane. Downstream dry gas will be used as feedstock to produce 140,000 barrels per day of clean, high quality GTL fuels and products. The Pearl GTL project is expected to produce some 3 billion barrels of oil equivalent wellhead gas over the period of the Development and Production Sharing Agreement.

A total of $10 billion of contracts have already been awarded for the project, including all major engineering, procurement and construction contracts. Construction began in the third quarter of 2006.

His Excellency Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, Second Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Industry of Qatar said today: “GTL represents a strategic diversification for Qatar in the development of our natural gas resources. In line with the wise vision of His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar, we intend to make Qatar the GTL capital of the world. Pearl GTL is a major part of that endeavour and I am pleased that with our partners Shell we have reached this milestone.”

Jeroen van der Veer said: “Pearl GTL will help create upstream and downstream value for Qatar by converting natural gas into clean, valuable liquid hydrocarbon products. Economically robust and environmentally constructive, it is an exciting project for Shell. It also reinforces Shell’s leadership in the GTL industry and the development of GTL technology. Today’s ceremony is a landmark event for the project and for Shell.”
