The World Future Energy Summit (WFES) took place in Abu Dhabi in January under the patronage of Masdar. The summit brought together the world’s leading innovators, scientists and experts in the field of future energy. Through the Masdar initiative, Abu Dhabi is leading several significant developments, including the creation of the world’s first zero-carbon, zero-waste city, the development of a national carbon capture and storage network, and the setting up of a new economic sector dedicated to sustainable energy and new clean technologies.
Shell participated in the conference and the exhibition. During the conference Graeme Sweeney, Shell’s Executive Vice President, Future Fuels & CO2, presented a keynote address entitled ‘World Future Energy Policy and Strategy’, and Mike Farmery, Global Fuel Technical & Quality Manager at Shell Aviation, presented a paper on ‘Alternative Fuels for Aviation’.
Shell’s stand at the exhibition was a showcase of the company’s latest technologies, and featured an eco-marathon car which runs on hydrogen. Shell also hosted an online meeting facility for visitors, called ‘Shell Meet at the Globe’.
Shell and Masdar formed an alliance through a Memorandum of Understanding, signed in 2006, the focus being on CO2 management, renewables, building local capabilities in research and development in advanced energy and sustainable technologies. |
